News Release: Susan Guidry Leads District A Race

January 12, 2010

First Time Candidate Bolstered by Midura’s Endorsement

New Orleans -   Susan Guidry’s campaign for Council District A today released the results of a poll that indicates Guidry has a commanding lead entering the final weeks of the primary election.  The poll of likely primary voters, conducted by Myers Research & Strategic Services, shows Democrat Guidry leading with 38 percent of the vote.  Former Councilman Jay Batt, a Republican, follows with 25 percent.  Republican Virginia Blanque trails with 6 percent and Independent Fred Robertson garners only 1 percent of the vote.

“Our campaign continues to be humbled by the outpouring of support that we are receiving from the voters of District A,” said Guidry.  “It is obvious that people in District A will no longer accept the old style politics of the past.  They are responding positively to our message of reducing crime, encouraging economic development and continuing our recovery efforts.”

The results are based on the following question, which respondents heard before they were presented with any information about the four candidates:

As you may know, Councilmember Shelley Midura is not running for re-election, creating an open seat in our area.  Now, let me ask about the primary election for City Council District A in February.  If the election for City Council were held today and the candidates were (rotate): Democrat Susan Guidry, Republican Jay Batt, Republican Virginia Blanque, and Independent Fred Robertson – for whom would you vote?

The findings are based on a survey of 400 likely primary voters in New Orleans Council District A.  Calling took place from January 3-4, 2010, and interviews were conducted by professional interviewers supervised by Myers Research & Strategic Services staff.  The margin of error associated with this data at a 95 in 100 percent confidence level is +/- 4.9 percent.
